Imprecatory

‘Imprecatory’ is the book design process I completed for my senior thesis. Everything you see here is completely written, designed, and type-set by me.

To begin with, I completed the novella draft and then set about typesetting all the chapters. The font (13pt) and margins are a bit wider than a normal novel, so that I could bump the 10,000 words into 80-odd pages.

Next, I set out to design the cover. My goal was to embody the religious undertones of the book, so I incorporated gold leaf and halo imagery into the design. I also edited the statue’s face into a gaping maw to convey the themes of hunger and cannibalism.

The next step was to expand this into a larger cover, incorporating a summary as well as a publishing house logo. It also incorporates a blank space for a barcode.

I worked on creating mockups with the finalized version of the cover.

Then I used those versions to create the advertisement you see at the top of the page. In addition to this, I made an introductory post about the novel to share on social media.

In the end, I’m proud of the cohesive theme I achieved and the way the final product looks.
